How often should an HVAC system be inspected/cleaned?
HVAC system components should be routinely inspected for cleanliness by visual means. It is recommended that in a residential setting the air handling unit be inspected annually and the ductwork be inspected every two years. In commercial, industrial, and healthcare settings it is recommended that the unit and the ductwork be inspected annually. Most residential systems in the Midwest can go between three and five years between cleanings. In commercial, industrial and hospital settings we can help determine the most opportune cleaning frequency that will fit our clients’ needs and requirements. It is recommended that a qualified HVAC inspector, such as a NADCA Certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) be used to determine the preliminary state of HVAC system component cleanliness. This person should have a verifiable working knowledge of HVAC system design, fundamental HVAC engineering practices, current industry HVAC cleaning and restoration techniques, and applicable industry standards.
